What Words Couldn’t Do, Silence Did

There was an old man in a quiet village. After his wife passed away, he lived alone in a small house. His two daughters often asked him to come and live with them, but he always refused, saying,

“I’ll stay in this old house—it reminds me of your mother.”

One summer, his daughters and grandchildren came to spend their vacation with him. Excited about their arrival, he had already bought groceries and prepared delicious food for everyone.

After lunch, the old man rested in his chair and soon dozed off. A while later, his grandchildren woke him up, calling, “Grandpa! Grandpa!”

Still sleepy, he reached for his mobile phone — a simple old device gifted by his children after his wife’s death. It had a family photo on the screen, his only picture of his late wife. But this time, the phone was missing.

“Give me my phone!” he shouted in panic. The children thought he was playing and ran away laughing.

He became frustrated and called his daughters. They stopped the kids, thinking they had upset their grandfather.

“What did you do?” they asked.

“We didn’t do anything!” the children cried.

The old man said, “I can’t find the phone you gave me. It’s very important — it has the only photo of your mother.”

Tears filled his eyes. The family began searching everywhere, calling the phone several times — but there was no ringtone.

After an hour of searching, one of the boys, Chandu, said, “Let’s try something different. Let’s be silent. No talking, no torchlight. I’ll listen carefully.”

His brother called from outside. In complete silence, Chandu listened closely.

After a few moments, he heard a faint buzz... buzz... from a pile of wooden logs. A dim light flickered. He reached in and found the phone.

“Grandpa, I found it! It was on silent mode!”

Everyone laughed with relief. The old man smiled, holding his precious phone close.

That day, they learned a powerful truth —
