What is the Story of Prachetas?

From King Vijitashva’s lineage was born a powerful ruler, Barhishat (also called Prachinbarhi). On Lord Brahma’s command, he married Shatadriti, daughter of the Ocean King. Blessed by celestial beings, the couple had ten sons, known as the Prachetas, all skilled archers.

When the king wished to arrange their marriages, the sons chose to meditate upon Lord Vishnu instead. On their journey, they met Lord Shiva, who gave them a sacred mantra. They meditated under the sea for 10,000 years, after which Vishnu appeared and granted them a boon—to help increase the human race through marriage to Marisha.

The Story of Sage Kandu and Marisha

Long ago, Sage Kandu’s penance was disrupted by the celestial nymph Pramalocha, sent by Indra. They lived together for 967 years, 6 months, and 3 days. From the sweat of Pramalocha’s body, a baby girl was born and left among trees. Chandra (the Moon God) found and raised her as Marisha.

Marriage and the Birth of Daksha

Following Vishnu’s instructions, the Prachetas married Marisha. In a previous life, Marisha had prayed for a long-lived, virtuous husband and was blessed to have ten husbands and a son equal to Brahma.

From their union was born Daksha Prajapati, who had once insulted Shiva and was reborn to complete his destiny.
